Description

An Anxiety of Influence. Lejla Kucukalic. Philip K. Dick: Canonical Writer of the Digital Age. New York: Routledge, 2009. 177 + xiv pp. $103.00 hb. Although interest in Philip K. Dick, his life and his work, has remained high since the 1980s, publications devoted to the man and his work ebb and flow. The year 2009 saw a number of publications on Philip K. Dick, with several more slated to follow in 2010. As Lejla Kucukalic notes in the Preface, this present volume fits into this continually emerging body of work: "This book joins the attempts of scholars and writers to illuminate Dick's writing in the place of hasty, perhaps less informed [sic] analyses of the author and his work. Many authors have found it necessary to label Dick, often unfavorably and more often uselessly" (xi). However, it seems to me that when an author calls out preceding writers, calls their work "hasty" and "less informed," then that author ought to be certain that she has her own work in order. Unfortunately, in this particular instance, that is not always the case.
